CHILDHOOD
Prashna Sakya
is the eldest daughter of Binod
Sakya and Sumitra Sakya. She was
born on April 26, 1981 and has
two other siblings. "I was
raised up by my maternal
grandfather and grandmother and
I spent my entire childhood at
my mother's place." More than a
granddaughter, I was brought up
as their own daughter" adds
Prashna.
Looking back at those years,
she remembers that she was a
very mischievous child and a
very pampered one as well. She
never had any interest in her
studies. She informs us with
excitement that she excelled in
climbing trees. "Once, I stole a
fruit and gave it to my mum. She
was so pissed off that she
thrashed me like anything. On
another occasion, I happen to
notice a two rupee coin under
the pillow. I took it and
together with my aunt, we bought
some candy. Fate had a similar
story in store for me. I got
another thrashing from my
mother. Not only that, I was
locked up in a room where there
were loads of cockroaches. Now,
I had learnt my lesson. These
two incidents are still fresh in
my mind." shares Prashna.
School days passed by with
much fun and frolic. However,
she changed schools frequently.
The first one she attended was
Jaljala Sishu Sadan followed by
Jiwan Jyoti, Bijaypur and
Central Boarding School. She
received her School Leaving
Certificate from Central
Boarding School. The memories of
those days are still very fresh.
ENTRY IN THE MUSIC SCENE
For Prashna, studying was
never a priority. Never did she
show any keen interest in her
studies. Whenever exams neared,
she was sent home by her
grandmother. However, this did
not help. Once, she was sitting
with her sister and they started
singing. From the other room,
they heard her father shout --
"Don't tune in to the cassette!"
But who cared! They continued
what they were doing. It was
with the slippers that her
father always beat them up. She
still remembers the size --
number seven -- and it still
scares her. "Anyway, he came in
our room with the intention of
punishing us. However, after
hearing us sing, he just stood
by the door and listened to us.
I am sure; we were able to
create an impression. Then
onwards, he began bragging that
his daughters sing very well. He
used to be all praises for us
regarding our so called
talents."
Music Media, Dharan plays a
very crucial part in Prashna's
musical career. In 1997, she
made her debut with her solo
album 'Hi Hello'. Meanwhile, she
was able to bag the sixth
position at 'Modern Songs
Competition' organized by Radio
Nepal. In 2000, she succeeded in
coming out as a winner in the
voice test hosted by Radio
Nepal. At the music competition,
'Timro Sur Mero Sangeet'
broadcasted on Nepal Television
she was able to win the first
prize. Before releasing her
second album 'Awaaz', Prashna
was honored with The Best Female
Pop Performance Award at Hits FM
Music Award 2002. She made her
debut as a playback singer in
the movie 'Saino' and since
then, she has given her voice to
movies like 'Kartavya', 'Santan',
'Meri Ama' and 'Bagar' among
others.
OPINION REGARDING FEMALE
VOCALISTS
I believe that one has to
struggle in every aspect of work
to get to the position they have
dreamt of. She feels that
inclusions of female vocalists
are growing everyday in the
Music Industry of Nepal. "If one
has a formal education regarding
music it is not impossible to
succeed but there has to be a
continuation to what you do. "Do
not give up". Media also plays a
vital role in the development of
an artist. Their support is
crucial too. But when it comes
to female artists there are
certain things that are
compromised as well. For
instance, female artists are not
given the freedom as enjoyed by
the male artists. Society and
its beliefs are still
judgmental, in the sense, the
way they perceive female
artists."
ME,
MYSELF
I am a very moody and
emotional person. I think I am a
bit of a lazy bone as well but
sometimes when it comes to work,
I am a workaholic. I like
spending time with my family and
also love to stroll about with
my friends. At times, I like to
listen to soothing music and
just be myself.
LOVE
AND MARRIAGE
I always feel there is
someone made for me and the
feeling itself gives me immense
happiness. To anyone, life is
incomplete without their
partner. I give preferences to
arrange marriage rather than
love marriage. I want to marry
only after two/three years. As
for now, I want to concentrate
more on my studies and music.
"My husband will be the one who
is understanding and sincere.
Not forgetting of course, he has
to have personality as well.
Till date, I have not found
anyone who fits the
bill...perfectly!" |
